Sunday: A Day in Guiamaca

Woke up this morning to roosters and the early morning hustle and bustle of a Guaimacan Sunday morning. Tyler, Matt and myself wanted coffee and breakfast so we started our journey to the supermarket. The sun was shinning and the town square had already started mingling. We were unsuccessful to discover any coffee as we were kind of unsure if we were supposed to drink the unfiltered coffee anyways...? So we settled for some granola bars at the market along with the most amazing pineapple juice. We got back to the hotel and then had to get ready for church at 9am.
Mass today was my first experience ever. I couldn't understand a thing that was said but I loved the passion in the Padre's voice when he sang certain phrases. I'm sure this is normal, but I had never experienced this before. I was very thankful for Steph for narrating the whole service for me, otherwise I would have been more confused then I already was. After all the up's and downs, and greetings and kneeling's we were introduced to the community. I do have to say though that the highlight of my morning at mass was the little 2 year old Guaimacan boy sitting with his mother in front of us playing peek a boo with Matt, myself, Steph and Laura. I wanted to steal him and love him forever lol!
After mass we spent the rest of the morning at Alicia and Kenzie's beautiful home. Coffee was served with the amazing culinary abilities of Matt. Thank you again for making breakfast for everyone! After breakfast we headed back to the clinic to continue setting up the Dental hand pieces, X-Ray machines, and the high speed suction unit that is literally just a hoover wet/dry vac machine! Plus we had to McGuiver one of the Dental hand pieces with a saliva ejector suction tip. I can't even explain what we did, but it works and thats all that matters! With three dental chairs working, the high speed suction and the clinic organized, we are finally ready for tomorrow when we finally start seeing patients!!! Wish us luck!
After setting up the clinic Sister Maria met up with us and we all piled into the back of the truck and managed to all make it over to the farm where they have about 100 acres and about 15 workers to work the land. They had so many crops and trees growing. I think everyone wanted to stay at this farm for the rest of our lives. I know I did. It was stunning. I tried to take pictures but they would never do what we saw justice.

Right now we are learning how to hand wash clothes on a wash board and hand make tortilla's from the local girls that live with Kenzie and Alicia. I would say this has been pretty much the best way to see any new country. Helping the community, making new friends and learning new skills. I can't wait to come back! Looking forward to starting Dentistry tomorrow.
