Welcome!

Welcome to our Honduras Dental Mission April 2014 blog! We are all excited to embark on this adventure. We take off from Dulles Airport at 4:45am EST, Saturday April 5th. We look forward to sharing our stories and pictures with you all while we take care of the patients in Guaimaca, Honduras.

HISTORY OF THE HONDURAS DENTAL MISSIONS

The Diocese of Fall River created the Honduran Mission in 2000. The mission is in the town of Guaimaca which is located two hours NE from Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. Through the health clinic, girls' school programs and other events, the Diocesan Mission aims to help the poorest of the poor in rural Honduras.

The Diocesan Mission has just completed construction on the medical/dental clinic in 2011 yet there is still much to be desired. Dr. Stephanie Cappiello founded the dental mission trip through UCLA ASDA as a first year dental student. Since the first trip in June of 2010, there have been 11 brigades of students and dentists that have traveled to the mission to provide needed care. We have even teamed up with other mission projects in Honduras to work in various areas in the country. Besides our April trip, there are 3 other trips planned for June and September 2014.

UCLA ASDA (American Student Dental Association) students are working to raise money and supplies to create a functional dental clinic for the Honduran Mission. The treatment we provide will include, oral health instruction, prophylaxis, restorations, extractions, root canals and more. Most of the people we will be providing care to have never had any dental treatment and many do not even have the resources for toothbruses and toothpaste or the understanding of the importance of preventative care. Our goal is to provide treatment to as many patients as possible, but even more importantly, to educate them on proper oral health care that they can use in the future. This will enable them to bring what they learn back to their families along with the toothbrushes and toothpaste we will be handing out. Our mission teams are very excited to be able to put our skills to use for such an impoverished community.

On Apirl 5, 2014, our team of 3 dentists: Dr. Tyler Ames, Dr. Stephanie Cappiello and Dr. Thomas Kaiser, a nurse, Laura Sandretti, a dental assistant, Savannah Ramirez and a firefighter, Mathew Hill will embark on our trip to Guaimaca. We plan to provide as comprehensive of care as we can to as many patients as possible. We strive to heal entire mouths and teach the people the importance of good oral hygiene for themselves and their children. We have received generous donations from the Henry Schein Cares Foundation and Colgate to support our trip. In addition, we have received instruments on loan from the World Dental Relief Foundation in addition to generous money and supply donations from friends and family. Without the support of our community, our mission would not be possible. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our trip! We hope we will make you proud.

Stay tuned for updates throughout our trip!!! There is WiFi at the mission, but it is not always good enough to post pictures. We will do our best to keep the blog updated day to day.

If you would like specific information about the mission, how to donate money or supplies or possibly participate on one of the mission trips, please email Dr. Stephanie Cappiello at
